Red Deer’s Ross Street Patio is celebrating its 10th anniversary with some special suds.

The patio, a gathering and entertainment venue in the heart of Downtown Red Deer, is hosted by the Downtown Business Association.

Sawback Brewing Company is releasing a new raspberry blonde ale named after the patio that’s become a popular local gathering place and music venue.

The new brew launches on May 27 from 5 to 8 p.m. on the patio, with free tastings, a light snack from Chubby’s Jerk BBQ and Kitchen and live music from Paeton Cameron and James Adams. The event is free and open to the public.

Red Deer’s Sawback Brewing Company has won numerous awards since 2019. Last year, the brewer’s Wild West Coast IPA and American Style Brett Beer won silver awards in the Canadian Brewing Awards.

Red Deer city council recently agreed to a request to create an entertainment district around the patio, where public alcohol consumption would be allowed. It’s believed Red Deer would be the first to take advantage of provincial amendments to the Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act to allow drinking in public areas outside licensed premises while enjoying music or other entertainment. City staff are expected to bring a bylaw back for council’s approval soon.
