This year marks the 100 anniversary of the birth of one of Red Deer’s most prominent educators. G. Harold Dawe was born on June 4, 1910, in Guelph, Ont.
This summer, the G.H. Dawe Community Centre will reopen after a two-year major renovation and revitalization project. The reopening on Aug. 1 will also be another milestone in the nearly 40-year history of a unique example of co-operation between the Red Deer Public and Red Deer Regional Catholic school districts, the City of Red Deer and the Red Deer Public Library.
Every Saturday morning, from the May long weekend to Thanksgiving, one of Red Deer’s most popular public events springs to life. It is the weekly Red Deer Public (Farmer’s) Market.
The early 1980s were very tough times economically in Central Alberta. New federal energy policies, followed by a sharp decline in world petroleum prices, sent the all-important oil and gas sector into a sudden and deep recession.
