Ian Hills of Red Deer is being honoured with a 2011 Merit Award from the Institute of Charted Accountants of Alberta.

The contributions he has made to the CA profession as well as to charitable and community causes are being recognized with the Fellow of the Charted Accountants, which is the highest designation that the profession bestows.

Hills said it feels “fantastic” to receive his first award from the ICAA.

“It makes me feel good to know we’ve done something in the community and that people recognize that,” he said.

Hills has a lengthy history of volunteering in Red Deer by offering his accounting expertise to various community organizations.

He previously served as a member of the finance committee of the Westerner Exposition Association, a director of the Red Deer Public Library and a director of the Piper Creek Optimist Club, where he also served terms as treasurer and president.

He has also volunteered as a course developer for the ICAA.

Hills career accomplishments has seen him progress as an articling student to partner of Heywood Homes and Partners LLP, where he has worked for over 40 years.

“His dedication and passion for Red Deer and the Alberta CA profession is worthy of such a respectable accolade,” said Jane Halford, ICAA CEO and executive director. A total of 20 recipients will be honoured with Merit Awards from a total of four categories — Lifetime Achievement Award, Fellows of the Chartered Accountants, Distinguished Service Awards and Early Achievement Awards.

All of the Merit Award recipients will be officially recognized at the 2011 Merit Awards Gala that will be held on June 24 at the Telus Convention Centre in Calgary.
