Alberta government announces plan to keep older workers on the job

The Alberta government’s latest plan to deal with labour shortages is to keep older workers working.

EDMONTON — The Alberta government’s latest plan to deal with labour shortages is to keep older workers working.

Employment and Immigration Minister Thomas Lukaszuk has announced an action plan that aims to revise retirement programs and pension policies.

It will also work to develop more age-friendly work environments, flexible work arrangements and phased retirement.

Lukaszuk presented the plan during the Human Resources Institute of Alberta annual conference Wednesday.

He says declining birth rates, aging baby boomers and increasing life expectancy are creating the perfect storm for future labour shortages.

Lukaszuk says retaining older workers keeps their experience, corporate memory and leadership.
