Both sides claimed victory Wednesday after a Quebec arbitrator imposed a first contract at a Wal-Mart store (NYSE:WMT) in St-Hyacinthe that gives existing employees a slight wage increase to offset union dues. The two-year agreement provides 150 to 200 existing employees a 30-cent an hour wage increase in each of the next two years. Newly hired workers will not be eligible for the wage increase. The Quebec agreement also recognizes typical union requirements that seniority be used for layoffs, recalls, promotions and vacations, along with a process for grievances. Wal-Mart Canada, with 318 stores and more than 77,000 employees, is part of the world’s biggest retailer, U.S. based Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
