Central Alberta continues to be well-represented on Alberta Venture magazine’s list of the province’s top revenue earners.
Red Deer’s Parkland Income Fund, and Agriculture Financial Services Corp. — a provincial Crown corporation headquartered in Lacombe, are ranked 30th and 49th respectively on the business publication’s 2010 list.
Last year, Parkland held down the No. 35 spot and AFSC was 76th.
The 2010 rankings were based on 2009 revenues, with Parkland reporting just over $2 billion and AFSC a little more than $1 billion.
Cracking Alberta Venture’s “Next 100” list were High Arctic Energy Services at No. 131, with $122.6 million in 2009 revenues; IROC Energy Services Corp. at 189, with just over $49 million; and Gamehost Income Fund at No. 193, with $43.9 million. Last year, High Arctic was the only one of these companies to rank in the top 200, at 155th.
Cervus Equipment Corp., which relocated its head office from Red Deer to Calgary several years ago, moved to the No. 80 spot with 2009 revenues of $377.5 million. Last year, it was ranked 109th.
Alberta Venture also compiled a list of the province’s 50 highest-grossing private companies, with Strata Energy Services Inc. — which operates out of Blindman Industrial Park north of Red Deer — holding down the final spot. It had 2009 revenues of $27.4 million.
As in previous rankings, energy companies held the top spots.
This year Suncor Energy Inc. was first, with 2009 revenues of $45 billion, followed by Imperial Oil Ltd. ($21.3 billion) and Husky Energy Inc. ($15.1 billion).
The magazine noted that the recession hit Alberta’s resource-oriented businesses particularly hard. It calculated that the total revenues of companies in its top 100 list were 29 per cent lower in 2009 than in 2008.
A list of Alberta’s top not-for-profit entities included Chinook’s Edge School Division at No. 22 ($105.8 million in 2009 revenues), Red Deer Public School District in 25th place ($93.4 million), Red Deer College ranked 27th ($88 million), Wolf Creek School Division in 29th spot ($74.3 million) and Wild Rose School Division in 43rd place ($56 million).
