Chrysler says it will add 1,100 jobs at the assembly complex as part of a $1.7 billion investment to build a new Jeep sport utility vehicle.

This town that has been churning out Jeeps since World War II and watched its fortunes rise and fall with the fortunes of Detroit’s automakers is now finding itself in an enviable position within the industry.

In little over half a year, automakers have promised to spend millions of dollars on retooling and expanding their factories in Toledo, moves that will create jobs and keep many more.
