Big commercial projects continue to pop up in the City of Red Deer’s Inspections and Licensing Department.

The city issued building permits for new Royal Bank of Canada and Toronto-Dominion Bank branches last month, which helped boost the value of commercial work approved in April to $2.4 million. That’s up from $1.4 million in April 2010, and brought the 2011 tally in this category to $20.1 million — more than four times the $4.6 million worth permits for commercial work that was approved during the first four months of 2010.

Both bank branches are slated to go up in the new Clearview Market Square being developed south of 67th Street and west of 30th Avenue. The permit for the Royal Bank branch was valued at $900,000 and the permit for the Toronto Dominion Bank at just under $800,000.

Residential approvals added $6.7 million to last month’s permit tally, down from $8.8 million in April 2010; industrial permits totalled $210,000, up from $25,000; and approvals for public work was unchanged at zero.

The total value of building permits issued in all categories last month was $9.2 million, down from $10.3 million a year ago.

For the year to date, permits valued at $45.2 million have been approved, up from $32.3 million to the same point in 2010.
