EnCana in court today on environment charges

Oil and natural gas giant EnCana is to face a preliminary hearing Tuesday for allegedly installing a pipeline across an ecological reserve in southern Alberta without a permit.

MEDICINE HAT — Oil and natural gas giant EnCana is to face a preliminary hearing Tuesday for allegedly installing a pipeline across an ecological reserve in southern Alberta without a permit.

The company and subsidiaries Alberta Energy Company Ltd., AEC West Ltd. and EnCana Corp. each face a charge under the federal Wildlife Act.

The charge of conducting industrial activity in the National Wildlife Area on Canadian Forces Base Suffield in March 2005 carries a maximum fine of $250,000.

The National Wildlife Area is located along the southeast section of the base.
