Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his cabinet will hold a two-day retreat

TORONTO — Five things to watch for in the Canadian business world in the coming week:

Cabinet retreat

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his cabinet will hold a two-day retreat starting on Monday. The federal government spent billions to help Canadians and businesses through the COVID-19 pandemic and keep the economy moving, but now those programs are set to start to winding down.

Aimia results

Aimia Inc. is set to report its second-quarter financial results on Tuesday. The loyalty rewards company has been working to transform itself since it sold its flagship Aeroplan program back to Air Canada.

Economic data

Statistics Canada will release several economic data points that will help paint a picture of how the economy began the second half of the year. The agency’s monthly survey of manufacturing for July comes on Tuesday while retail and wholesale trade figures for the month come Friday.

Home sales

The Canadian Real Estate Association is expected to release is monthly home sales figures for August on Tuesday. The Canadian real estate market has been on a tear, fuelled by pent up demand from the spring when the market froze due to the pandemic and super low mortgage rates that have reduced the cost of borrowing.

Inflation

Statistics Canada will release its consumer price index for August on Wednesday. The annual pace of inflation has slowed to a crawl during the pandemic.
