Kaila Doucette is preparing to open Hollywood & Wood

Glamorous and fibrous

Hollywood & Wood might seem an unusual name for a store, but it makes sense once you survey the contents of the Red Deer shop. Scheduled to open late next week at No. 5, 5202 54th Ave., Hollywood & Wood combines glamorous and fibrous under one roof — from jewelry, wigs, purses and other accessories, to wooden iPhone cases, furniture and even watches.

“It’s Hollywood and it’s wood,” explains owner Kaila Doucette matter-of-factly.

“It’s kind of the best of both worlds.”

A professional photographer who operated as Captured Essences, and more recently as Effin’ Fabulous, Doucette ventured into retail via an indirect path.

She sold her large, six-bedroom house and was forced to put years of collectables into storage. After selling some, she decided a better option would be to open a store.

An avid shopper — both online and in person — Doucette continues to add to her inventory.

“Anything wood, I buy,” she said, describing the growing popularity of wood products — especially rustic and decorative pieces.

Doucette plans to remain active in photography, with a large room in her premises dedicated to the development of a studio.

Hollywood & Wood will initially operate Monday to Friday, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., plus one day on the weekend.

“I might surprise people and be closed on Saturday and open on Sunday,” said Doucette, explaining how Saturdays tend to be busy for many people, but when they have more time on Sundays, many stores are closed.

Additional information about Hollywood & Wood can be found on the store’s Facebook page.
