A lab for electrical apprentices at Red Deer College will soon have the name Studon Electric & Controls Electrical Lab.

The company has contributed a total of $250,000 to RDC’s Building Communities Through Learning campaign, putting $150,000 towards the campus in 2007 and an additional $100,000 later that year towards student support.

In November, the first two students received $2,000 scholarships from the Studon Electric & Controls Endowment to use for their studies based on their academic standing, financial need and community involvement.

The company has a special connection to the school, with Don Sutherland, CEO and president of Studon Electric & Controls, being an alumnus of Red Deer College.

Michael Donlevy, associate vice-president of community relations at RDC, said donations like this show that the facilities the college has built or is looking to build are supported by the community. He said support for scholarships helps the college provide students access to RDC who might not be able to afford it otherwise.

“We are pleased that the team at Studon is so committed to enhancing opportunities for Central Albertans at RDC,” Donlevy said. “Their investment not only helps provide RDC (with) the tools to make this a better place to learn, but gives student scholarship recipients the financial tools to take advantage of the learning opportunities available locally.”

Studon Electric & Controls formed in 1995 and has grown from three employees to several hundred, growing from completing small local installations to working on multi-million dollar facilities across western Canada.
