An international cosmetics company that emphasizes natural and handmade products will open a store in Red Deer next Wednesday.

Lush, whose products include soaps, creams, deodorants, perfumes, shampoos, skin cleansers and moisturizers, will operate out of a shop in the new wing at Bower Place Shopping Centre. The outlet will be its 44th in Canada and sixth in Alberta, with two currently operating in each of Edmonton and Calgary, and one in Banff. Headquartered in the United Kingdom, Lush was started in 1994 and now has 580 stores worldwide. Mark Wolverton, Lush’s North American president, said his company’s expansion plans were not deterred by the current economic slowdown. “Despite the tough retail climate, we at Lush believe that our products can provide an ample dose of luxury at a reasonable price,” he said in a news release.

Lush uses organic fruit and vegetables, essential oils and safe-synthetic ingredients in its products. All are free of animal fats, with 74 per cent vegan-friendly, 65 per cent preservative-free and 58 per cent sold without packaging.
