Manitoba will get new area code, 10-digit dialling by fall of 2012

Manitoba is running out of phone numbers, so the province is going to get a second area code.

OTTAWA — Manitoba is running out of phone numbers, so the province is going to get a second area code.

Federal regulators have announced that a new 431 area code will be introduced Nov. 3, 2012, in addition to the existing 204 code.

The move also means everyone in the province will have to dial 10-digits, even for local calls, starting Oct. 20, 2012.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission says without the changes, Manitoba would run out of phone numbers in 2013.
