New owner speeds up reopening of old Domtar pulp mill in Saskatchewan

The new owner of a Saskatchewan pulp mill that has been shut down for five years is moving to speed up its reopening.

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. — The new owner of a Saskatchewan pulp mill that has been shut down for five years is moving to speed up its reopening.

Resources Minister Bill Boyd says Netherlands-based Paper Excellence has finalized the purchase of the old Domtar (TSX:UFS) mill in Prince Albert.

Domtar announced in March that Paper Excellence was investing $200 million to convert the mill to produce dissolving pulp used in textiles to make rayon.

The conversion was originally expected to take between 18 months and two years to complete.

But Paper Excellence say it wants to reopen the mill within 12 months and will open it office by next week.

The Saskatchewan government is promising to commit $500,000 a year in the first two years to help train new mill operators.
