The eating options in downtown Red Deer have broadened with the recent opening of Vietnamese Subs & Rolls.
The shop, which also carries convenience store goods, is located at 4911 50th Ave. — the former site of Amos & Andes.
Owner Tony Pham described a Vietnamese sub as a toasted baguette with sauteed meat and vegetables.
“It’s popular in Calgary and Edmonton, but this is the first time that it’s introduced in Red Deer,” he said.
Vietnamese salad rolls are also on the menu, with these consisting of shrimp or pork rolled in rice paper with vermicelli and vegetables.
Additionally, customers can order vermicelli and rice dishes, and soups and sandwiches.
On the beverage side, the business serves about a dozen flavours of bubble tea, said Pham.
“It’s just like a Slurpee, but it’s made out of fruit and milk.”
He said the menu will be expanded, with more fruit drinks to be added.
Pham, who has been in Red Deer since 1993, previously operated another local restaurant.
Although Vietnamese Subs & Rolls currently offers only take-out service, Pham hopes to soon accommodate customers who want to eat in his shop.
“The plan is in place for it.”
Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.
