Discarded placards overflow from a garbage bin on Parliament Hill following a demonstration in support of Nortel pensioners on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Wednesday. Former Nortel employees marched on Parliament Hill to ask the federal government to amend laws to protect long-term disability benefits and pensions when companies go bankrupt. One group, Canadian Nortel Employees on Long Term Disability, also allege Nortel violated Quebec human-rights and freedom laws promising protection and security to the disabled. It plans to file a human-rights complaint on behalf of 38 employees seeking full compensation and punitive damages. Lawrence Clooney, who is on disability income, says disabled Nortel employees now stand to lose 90 per cent of their income.
