People want low taxes, less government: MP

Conservative MP Maxime Bernier says it’s clear Canadians are looking for political leaders willing to make the tough choices needed to reduce taxes and cut the size of government.

MONTREAL — Conservative MP Maxime Bernier says it’s clear Canadians are looking for political leaders willing to make the tough choices needed to reduce taxes and cut the size of government.

Bernier cited the rise of the U.S. Tea Party movement, the election of Rob Ford as Toronto mayor and the launch of the right-of-centre movement Reseau Liberte-Quebec as proof that the traditional approach to politics is being questioned.

“The population is ready to support politicians who clearly say what they think, who recognize that there are difficult choices to make instead of promising heaven and earth,” he told the Montreal Economic Institute.

Bernier said the discussion should be based on freedom, individual responsibility, less government and more free markets.

Governments just can’t stop growing and going deeper into debt, he said.
