Three local businesses were honoured by the Red Deer Chamber of Commerce at the 29th Annual Business of the Year Awards on Tuesday.

Scott Builders Inc. was picked as top business with more than 50 employees at the banquet held at the Red Deer College Arts Centre. CARE Industries Ltd. was chosen in the category for businesses with 16 to 49 employees and Restaurant 27 and Lounge was singled out among businesses with 15 or fewer employees.

The Chamber of Commerce-organized awards are held in conjunction with BDC Small Business Week. Businesses do not have to be chamber members to be eligible for the awards chosen by an independent judging panel. Judging criteria include customer service, growth, awards, innovation, community contribution and future expectations.

“Red Deer boasts a diverse, innovative and resilient business community,” says chamber president Bruce Schollie, in a prepared statement. “We’re privileged to showcase and celebrate the strong, vibrant businesses in this region.”

Scott Builders was formed in 1971 and is a local leader in commercial, industrial and institutional low-rise construction. The company focuses on offering a single-point contact for every phase of construction.

The wholly employee-owned company operates out of six branches in Red Deer, Calgary, Edmonton; and in Ontario in Milton, Barrie and Owen Sound. Combined, the branches were ranked 35th out of the top 40 Canadian contractors by volume in 2009.

Red Deer-based CARE Industries aims to be a leader in the manufacture of well servicing equipment, such as service rigs, masts, pump trucks and mud tanks. The company also offers complete repair and retrofit services.

Restaurant 27 first opened its doors in downtown Red Deer in January 2008 under the partnership of brothers Darren and Dwayne Gauthier. The concept was to open a contemporary restaurant specializing in fine dining in a casual atmosphere.

In 2009, the restaurant was moved to the former Capers restaurant location at 3301 50th Ave. The local and Canadian fusion cuisine draws from local and organic suppliers whenever possible.

The chamber has more than 920 business members. The organization promotes business growth and prosperity through leadership and innovation.
