The Red Deer Regional Airport will soon have a new CEO.

The Red Deer Regional Airport Authority announced on Tuesday that Roelof-Jan (RJ) Steenstra is scheduled to move into the position on March 7.

Stenstra, who lives in Calgary, was selected following a four-month national recruitment process.

A news release from the airport authority described him as a management and marketing professional with more than 12 years experience in the corporate and not-for-profit sectors — most recently as director of creative services in Xerox Global Services’ western region.

Steenstra’s profile on business networking site Linkedin indicates he has served on a variety of boards, committees and organizations, including WorldSkills 2009.

“My focus for the first year will be to build on (the good work at the airport), further cementing the airport’s key role in serving Red Deer and the region,” said Steenstra in the release.

Liam O’Connell served as the airport’s CEO until resigning last May. Since then, Red Deer economic development officer Cyril Cooper has filled the position on an interim basis.

Located at Springbrook, the Red Deer Regional Airport provides scheduled passenger and charter services, and has more than 39,000 aircraft movements a year. The airport authority is overseen by the City of Red Deer, Red Deer County and the Red Deer Chamber of Commerce.
