Regulators OK Suncor’s Wintering Hills wind project

A subsidiary of Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU) has won regulatory approval to build its planned 88-megawatt Wintering Hills wind power project in the Drumheller area.

CALGARY — A subsidiary of Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU) has won regulatory approval to build its planned 88-megawatt Wintering Hills wind power project in the Drumheller area. The subsidiary, Suncor Energy Products Inc., said Monday that the Alberta Utilities Commission had given its OK to the plan, which calls for the installation of up to 55, 1.6 megawatt turbines on about 6,475 hectares of privately-owned land about 20 kilometres southeast of Drumheller. “Today’s announcement is a significant milestone that brings us one step closer towards the development of Suncor’s largest operated wind project to date,” said Jay Thornton, executive vice-president, Energy Supply, Trading and Development.

At peak operation, the project is expected to generate enough clean electricity to power about 35,000 homes, displacing the equivalent of 200,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
