An $8.5-million building permit for the first phase of Medican Development’s Sierras Michener Hill boosted the value of construction approved by the City of Red Deer last month to $15.5 million.
This tally was down from the $19.8 million worth of permits issued in November 2008.
Residential construction accounted for most of last month’s approvals, with the value of work in this category valued at $14.7 million.
A year ago, residential building permits represented a little more than $6 million in construction.
Permits issued for industrial work last month came in at a combined $644,000, down from $4.1 million a year earlier.
Commercial projects added $109,000, down from $814,000.
No work was approved in the public category last month, a sharp contrast to November 2008, when $8.9 million worth of public permits were issued.
With one month remaining in the year, the accumulated value of permits generated by the city for 2009 is at $134.1 million.
At the same point last year, $250 million worth of work had been approved.
In the case of residential construction, the year-to-date tally is $78.2 million, as compared with $96 million for the first 11 months of 2008.
Work on Sierras Michener Hill began last week. Plans call for a 248-unit condominium, with the first phase to consist of 52 suites, as well as common facilities.
The condominium will be linked to Extendicare Canada’s continuing care facility currently under construction at Michener Hill Village.
