A member of Stantec Consulting’s Red Deer office has been named president of the Canadian Public Works Association.
Darwin Durnie is managing leader of the architecture and buildings engineering group with Stantec’s local office, which covers Northern and Central Alberta. He’s been elected to a two-year term to head up the CPWA, which is an organization of public works professionals in Canada that promotes professional excellence and public awareness.
Durnie went to work for a consulting firm in 1981, before joining the Town of Drumheller as director of infrastructure in the mid-1980s.
He’s delivered training for communities in topics ranging from asset management to the film industry and crisis communications, and looked after response management for emergencies like floods and water contamination.
Durnie was remote sites manager for the 2002 G8 World Leaders summit, and also served as associate director of facilities and sites preparation for the G8 and G20 World Leaders Summit in Ontario earlier this year.
He’s been a member of CPWA since its inception in 1986, and served as a director on its board of directors for two years. Durnie has also been president of the Alberta Public Works Association.
A CPWA news release said its key issues include asset management and sustainability, emergency management, infrastructure policy, water and wastewater management and transportation.
