EDMONTON — It’s a pre-Christmas trade show that’s more geared to stripper poles than the North Pole. More than 20,000 people were expected to flock to the Edmonton Expo Centre this weekend for the annual Taboo Naughty But Nice Sex Show.

Terry Degrace and his wife Brenda checked it out, explaining that now that their children have left home, they want to get re-acquainted with one another. They weren’t sure what exactly they would find but said they were open to trying new thngs.

“I think people are a little bit more open these days,” said Terry, 55, as he browsed through some play candy. “It’s not something that’s hidden away behind locked doors anymore.” A few booths away, a curious group of shy onlookers were gathered around Janine Kapsch as she swung around on her shiny brass pole.

Kapsch said she was looking for a fun way to work out when she discovered pole dancing; now she’s an instructor and credits her new sexy moves for boosting her self-esteem. “I didn’t even realize until I started how much confidence you get from it and how much fun it was,” said Kapsch, who works for Aradia Fitness. Owner Krystal Wall has seen a huge increase in her business, which also teaches chair dancing, lap dancing and sensual floor fitness.

Women from 18 to 70 are choosing to get in touch with their sexy feminine side, Wall said, while others are opting to strip down to the bare essentials.

Erica Tait specializes in boudoir photography and said the business is definitely no longer taboo. The majority of the women she photographs give their sexy lingerie photos to their husbands or boyfriends as gifts. Aside from a barrage of pleasure toys, costumes and lingerie, the three-day sex show also features seminars with sex experts, burlesque performers and body artists.
