VANCOUVER — Telus (TSX:T) is rebranding its TV and high-speed Internet services and calling it Optik, as it competes for consumers in Western Canada with cable company Shaw Communications Inc.

“Our cable competitor in the west has had an effective monopoly on the entertainment business and we’re here to compete,” Telus’ chief commercial officer Joe Natale said Tuesday.

“There are three million households in Western Canada and we’re in a march to get a very strong share of that base,” Natale said. The Vancouver-based company also said it is investing another $1.7 billion this year to expand its network and bring faster Internet and Optik TV to more homes in Alberta and British Columbia.
