OTTAWA — Stronger truck sales provided a boost as the number of new vehicles sold increased 3.2 per cent to 131,393 in January. Statistics Canada reports preliminary industry data indicate the number of new vehicles sold in February fell one per cent. Sales of trucks (which include minivans, sport-utility vehicles, light and heavy trucks, vans and buses) were up 6.6 per cent to 73,964 in January, partially offsetting December losses.

Car sales were down for a third straight month, falling one per cent to 57,429. The agency says a 10.4 per cent decline in sales of overseas-built passenger cars accounted for the drop. Sales of North American-built passenger cars rose 6.3 per cent after two months of decreases. The total number of new vehicles sold increased in eight provinces in January.
