Young entrepreneurs will have an opportunity during the next few weeks to learn a few tricks about starting and running a business.

The Canadian Youth Business Foundation is offering a series of six business plan workshops in Red Deer, with each to run two hours and take place in the Red Deer Chamber of Commerce boardroom at 3017 Gaetz Ave.

The first, scheduled for this Saturday at 9:30 a.m., will provide an overview of things to consider when starting a new business or growing an existing one. It will include stories about successful entrepreneurs and information concerning the remaining workshops.

The second workshop will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday. It will focus on market research and methods for conducting it.

The workshop series will continue on Saturday, June 4 at 9:30 a.m. with a session on how to build and implement a marketing plan. That afternoon at 1 p.m., discussion will shift to small business operations — specifically, how to hire and keep the right people.

The Canadian Youth Business Foundation series wraps up with two workshops on Saturday, June 11. The first, at 9:30 a.m., will be on legal and financial risks for small businesses, and best practices for addressing these.

The afternoon session, at 1 p.m., will cover business plans, including implementation strategies.

The Canadian Youth Business Foundation provides start-up mentoring, financing and business resources for Canadians 18 to 34 years old.

This week, it announced the addition of Red Deer-based (engage) as a community partner.

Started last summer, (engage) is a networking group for young entrepreneurs and professionals. Its name is derived from Entrepreneurial Networking Group. Achieve. Grow. Engage.

A news release issued by the Canadian Youth Business Foundation said its community partners provide local guidance and resources to young entrepreneurs. They arrange loan review committees to help select recipients for CYBF support and enlist local business leaders to volunteer as mentors.

“The goals of CYBF align perfectly with (engage)’s mandate to support young professionals and entrepreneurs in Central Alberta,” said Tyler Bowman, vice-president of (engage).
