We Canadians are definitely under the curse of living in interesting times. I want the Doug Ford “Canada is not for sale” hat. Regardless of who may want to purchase us, I would wear it proudly. I am of the view that Canada is the best country in the world for me. Nobody can challenge my personal opinion on what I prefer (and I am at liberty to change my mind, so don’t take me for granted Canada). Whereas I might partner with almost anyone towards a mutual goal, my personal independence is crucial to my existence, and somehow being Canadian is an essential part of this independence.
What is immigration about? You like another country better, for whatever reason, you can apply to go there. The other country decides if it wants you. Mutuality is important. The threat of war – physical or economic (from our closest neighbour, in the latter instance) makes me angry and reminds me that trust must be earned or there needs to be laws and ways to enforce them otherwise, watch your back... The rule of law is important to continuing to have a strong democracy.
I was recently visiting one of my favourite neighbouring countries’ cities (Las Vegas) when I was asked if I was Canadian. I am always surprised that I have a Canadian accent as, to me, we have none. I was surprised then noted it must be the accent, but the rather astute server indicated that it was my politeness (laugh out loud emoji should go here). But even if we are polite, and kind, as the saying goes, do not mistake this for weakness.
That is the thing about being a woman. I readily agree that men, on average, are physically stronger than us. Those same men were once helpless children, and if lucky, will live to be older and in decline. In other words, there are reasons to create an strong and empathetic society, with personal responsibility, that benefits everyone of us in some way. Our society does not need to be based on physical strength (but we have to be able to defend ourselves).
Central Alberta has some changes ahead. Our esteemed Mayor Ken Johnston in the City of Red Deer is not running again, nor is our Honourable Member of Parliament Earl Dreeshen. We want the most meritorious replacement so this is my pitch to encourage women leaders to run. Alberta is a successful jurisdiction and leads in women leaders throughout history. I suspect this is one of the main reasons were are so successful. Not excluding half of the population from positions of power and influence doubles your chances of success. I believe men and women equally can lead at home and outside the home. Your country depends on you.
Leading ladies, this is your time, we need you.
