Cari MacLean ready to step it up

Cari MacLean is honorary co-chair of the 2019 Canada Winter Games, and she shares this role with her husband, Ron. She made national headlines five years ago when she shared her story of having a massive pulmonary embolism, which put her at the brink of death. Cari accepted the Sheraton Celebrity Dance Off 2018 challenge as it aligns with her new-found philosophy of saying yes and making a difference whenever she can.

Celebrity: Cari MacLean

Partner: Jone Lam

1. How would you describe yourself as a dancer before this experience?

I have never had formal dance training. No exposure to lessons as a child. Not known to be the first on the dance floor or the last. Best known as a solo dancer at parties and girls night outs, usually props are present, i.e., anything that resembles a pole

2. What is the best quality about your dance partner?

Best quality my dance pro Jone Lam has is his ability to break down dance into baby steps. He doesn’t let me progress to the next level until I can nail the fundamentals. And he is a walking fireball of energy. The vibe he brings is off the charts crazy.

3. What is the one fear you have when you dance in front of the crowd?

I have two actually. 1) Falling 2) Missing/forgetting a step or move to the point of no return

4. What would you like others to know about this experience?

Going to separate this into two parts. Dance portion: a) learning a new skill at any age is invigorating mentally and physically b) I have surrendered complete control to Jone. I’m trusting him to get us to where we need to be on April 14. Seems a surreal vision at this point. Sometimes you just have to let go! Fundraising portion: a) I’m absolutely blown away by the support of friends in Red Deer, who organized a fundraising luncheon on Feb 5 at the Holiday Inn in Red Deer. As well, my friends and hockey teammates in Oakville are so excited about this endeavour that some are even considering making the trek out West to be with me in Red Deer on April 14. With this kind of support, I can’t let them down.

5. Do you watch Dancing with the Stars?

I’ve watched Dancing with the Stars for years. But never with an eye to one day be doing something similar. It was purely a guilty viewing pleasure. Love Maks (Maksim Chmerkovskiy) and love the Paso Doble.

Other dancers include: Duane Daines, Troy Gillard, Mellisa Hollingsworth, Carla MacLeod, Cindy Mandrusiak, Todd Simenson, and John Young.
