Wheeler to perform Beethoven
Red Deer pianist Dale Wheeler will perform a Beethoven sonata and Grieg’s interpretation of Norwegian folk music during his Themes and Variations recital on Sunday.
The RDC music instructor and chair of performing arts will tackle the exotic harmonies of Spanish composer Federico Mompou’s Variations on a Theme of Chopin at the Arts Centre Mainstage. The piece features 12 variations on Chopin’s well known Prelude in A Major.
As well, Wheeler will perform Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonata in A-flat, and Edvard Grieg’s Ballade, Opus 24, which is comprised of 14 variations on a Norwegian folk tune.
Wheeler, who has a doctorate from the University of Oklahoma and a degree from the Trinity College of Music in London, England, has taught post-secondary music students for more than 20 years. He has also been involved as recitalist, adjudicator, accompanist or clinician in music events throughout the world, including a recent conference in Serbia and workshop in Korea.
Tickets to the 7:30 p.m. recital are $15.25 ($12.25 RDC staff/ $11.25 children, students, seniors) from Ticketmaster.
