Extras hurt

Four movie extras working on a film starring Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson had to be treated for minor injuries after their boat hit a reef or sandbar off Tofino’s Tonquin Beach.

TOFINO, B.C. — Four movie extras working on a film starring Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson had to be treated for minor injuries after their boat hit a reef or sandbar off Tofino’s Tonquin Beach.

Lorraine Jamison, a publicist with Vancouver’s TCG Productions Ltd., said one man involved in the shooting of The Big Year was kept in Tofino General Hospital overnight Tuesday for observation.

“Everyone’s going to be OK,” she said Wednesday morning. “If somebody’s injured, you want to make sure they’re checked out.”

She said the movie’s producers have also visited the injured man, who was expected to be released.

Jamison said the accident took place around 7:30 p.m., when the tide was low.

She said the boat was carrying about 25 background performers when it struck a reef or sandbar. First aid was available on the boat, she added.

Three of the injured extras were treated at Tofino General Hospital and released Tuesday night.
