Downtown Red Deer will turn into a Harry Potter wonderland next weekend, celebrating the release of two new books on the boy wizard.

The Ross Street Patio is being temporarily re-established on Ross Street for the Halloween-like festivities, which will take place mostly outdoors between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday Oct. 21 and 22 (and indoors at some participating Ross Street businesses on Saturday evening).

Special guests include members of Central Alberta Quidditch, Otis the Owl from the Medicine River Wildlife Centre, and pooches from the Karing Homes Dog Boarding and Training Centre.

Activities include wand-making, a movie marathon, a Quidditch mini-match, a photo booth at the entrance of ‘Diagon Alley,’ and live music. These activities will be spread among the sponsors involved — Sunworks The Coconut Room, Tribe, To the Lost, Forgotten Alley, Housewarmings, Red Boar Smokery and the Downtown Business Association.

At the Hub on Ross, Red Deer comedians will be presenting a free night of family-friendly comedy as a lead-up to the weekend on Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 6 to 7 p.m. Clint Worke, Jason Steele and other comedians from Red Deer and Calgary will take the stage, as well as any audience members who want to tell a clean joke, sing a song or do an improv for the open-mic segment.

Two new books — Harry Potter: A History of Magic, and Harry Potter: A Journey Through A History of Magic — are coming out this month to mark the 20th anniversary of the first Harry Potter book.
