Pottery, collages part of First Friday openings

Raku pottery, collages and an author’s reading will be part of the First Friday gallery openings for October.

Iridescent bowls, vessels and wall hangings created by 12 local artists in the raku method, will be showing at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre. The opening reception for the Red Deer Pottery Club’s Aurora Borealis of the Earth show is Friday, 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibit continues to Nov. 1.

Grave Matters, a series of collages by Paul Boultbee inspired by history, genealogy and gravestones, is showing through November in the Corridor Community Gallery, downstairs in the Recreation Centre. The collages incorporate drawings, photographs and textures, and the gallery is open to 10 p.m. on Friday.

Out of the Hole, Works by Robin Byrnes, is continuing to be shown in the Kiwanis Gallery of the Red Deer Public Library until Oct. 16.

Since the opening reception was held last month, there will be a special presentation in the Snell Auditorium on Friday by local author Judith Moody. She will read from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. from her two published Golden Eye works about a West Coast aboriginal boy’s mystical adventures, and from her work in progress, Golden Eye, Haida Rescue.

The Hub on Ross will be exhibiting a group art show, All the Art We Do, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Following this, blues hall-of-famer Claude Godin will perform on his saxophone, accompanied by a pianist Audrey Graham, bassist Curtis Phagoo, and vocalist Haeley Ginter. Special guest is jazzy singer/songwriter David Ward, a former CKUA host who now works for CBC radio.

Gallery IS presents His hands . . . My hand, art by David Coates. The opening reception is from 6 to 9 p.m.

Homesickness, Harmony, and the Poetics of Hope is a large ceramics installation by Red Deer College visual arts instructor Robin Lambert at the Harris-Warke Gallery in Sunworks on Ross Street. The reception for this exhibit, which was inspired by the “need to connect, belong, be a part of something,” is from 6 to 8 p.m. It runs until Oct. 21.

Art from the Streets is hosting a group show. The openings is from 6 to 8 p.m. at 4935 51st St.

Pressed, an exhibit of multimedia works by Carol Nault, is on at The Velvet Olive. The reception is from 6 to 9 p.m.

Cafe Pichilingue is showing artworks by Russell Smethurst.

The Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery is showing Farming Out Our Future, from Our Collection, and James Bower and the United Farmers of Alberta exhibits. It has extended hours on Friday from 5 to 8:30 p.m.
