Films examining issues of sexual discrimination, education, family and secrets will be showcased during the Red Deer Independent Film Group’s Winter 2011 Series.

Reel Movie Mondays begins on Jan. 3 with Made in Dagenham.

The drama follows women who walked off the job at Britain’s Ford Dagenham in 1968 in protest of sexual discrimination. The move led directly to equal pay legislation across the globe.

Waiting for Superman screens on Jan. 17.

The documentary looks at the crisis of public education in the United States. Academy Award winning director Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth) follows five children trying to navigate their way through the system in which more students are falling behind in basic skills despite spending increases.

Incendies, by French Canadian director Denis Villeneuve, plays on Jan. 31.

The film follows two siblings as they attempt to unravel the mystery of their mother’s life after her death. They learn of a brother they have never heard of during a journey that leads them from Montreal to Lebanon.

Barney’s Version screens on Feb. 14.

The humorous film, an adaptation of the international best-selling novel by Mordecai Richler, follows Barney as he tries to tell his version of events after a former acquaintance threatens to reveal the sins.

Fathers & Sons, the final film in the series, plays on Feb. 28.

Director Carl Bessai turned the lens on four distinct and engaging father-and-son relationships to explore family dynamics and the bond between fathers and sons.

The film is a followup to the director’s 2008 Mothers & Daughters.

All films play at the Cineplex Galaxy Theatre and start at 7 p.m.

Tickets at the door are $8 for members and $10 for non-members.

Ticket packages for the Winter 2011 Series are available at $35 for members and $45 for non-members.

Red Deer Independent Film Group memberships and advanced tickets can be purchased from the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery. A membership costs $10 and entitles the holder to discount ticket prices throughout the 2010-2011 season.
