Saxophonist joining big band for jazz performance

Veteran Sylvan Lake jazz saxophonist Eric Allison will join the Red Deer College Big Band for a concert on Friday featuring the music of Oscar Peterson and other Canadian jazz greats.

Veteran Sylvan Lake jazz saxophonist Eric Allison will join the Red Deer College Big Band for a concert on Friday featuring the music of Oscar Peterson and other Canadian jazz greats.

Tunes popularized by Michael Buble, Diana Krall and Maynard Ferguson will be on the Canada Swings — Jazz Night program at the Red Deer College Arts Centre, as will Roger and Hart’s famous My Funny Valentine, and Calgary trombonist Ian McDougall’s Desolation Blues.

Allison, voted Best Jazz Artist by the readers of the New York Times Fort Lauderdale-Palm Beach edition in 2003, will perform the Atlantic Suite from Tides, by Phil Nimmons.

Allison has played with a litany of jazz greats, including Zoot Sims and Ritchie Cole.

Allison has also recorded three solo CDs, toured Japan and Korea with pianist Eddie Higgins, and played with the Florida Philharmonic.
