The winner of the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra class of 2017 Red Deer Festival of Performing Arts will be breaking new ground for herself as she brings French composer Camille Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto to life.

Saint-Saëns himself explored some new territory when he composed the Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor in 1872. He did not follow the three-movement format that had been common in classical and early romantic concertos, choosing instead to write the piece in one continuous movement.

Also on the program is Franz Schubert’s Excerpts from Rosamunde. Though the introduction is dark and reflective, it immediately changes mood and its energetic first theme is followed by one of Schubert’s beautiful, simple and lyrical melodies.

Concert goers are sure to delight in the back and forth between the local emerging artist and the orchestra.

The concert is possible with the support from the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra and local sponsors along with funding from the City of Red Deer, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and Canada Council for the Arts.

Melodies in March starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are available through the Black Knight Ticket Centre.
