100 Men Red Deer vote to support Safe Harbour Society’s transitional housing program

More male members are welcome at next meeting on March 6, 2017

The Safe Harbour Society is the latest local charity benefiting from the generosity of 100 Men Red Deer.

The group heard presentations from three worthy local charities on Monday night, and then voted to donate to the Safe Harbour Society. It should receive a total of $10,000 once all donations are in.

The honourable mentions were The Red Deer and District SPCA and the Red Deer Hospice Society. President Jeff Rock thanked all three non-profits for supporting great causes. The tipping point in favour of Safe Harbour, he said, was hearing that it runs transitional housing that helps people who are homeless or overcoming addictions turn their lives around and reintegrate into society.

100 Men Red Deer is a group that helps men connect with each other and with local charities. It meets four times a year. Members nominate three local charities for consideration. After hearing speakers, they vote on which one to support at the meeting. Each of the 100 men then donate $100 towards the cause.

Rock said only just over 80 men made it to this week’s meeting at the International Beer Haus, but those who didn’t come can fulfill their pledge by making an online donation through

Rock said more men are always welcome to share in the camaraderie and support a community group. “Encourage a buddy to sign up online,” he added, and they will be added to the mailing list.

The next 7 p.m. meetings at the International Beer Haus are on March 6, June 5, Sept. 11, and Dec. 4, 2017. Nominations for charities to be considered at the meeting can be made at
