Central Alberta Theatre's latest production Any Night is billed as a contemporary Hitchcockian thriller.
The play directed by Ronen Eagles revolves around Anna, a troubled modern dancer, played by Ash Del Carmen, struggling with the death of her mother. When she moves into a new basement apartment seeking solace and solitude, she finds herself drawn to Patrick, a young man living in a suite above her, played by Benedict Kirtzinger.
The mystery romance wouldn't be Hitchcockian if there weren't some psychological twists.
Why is the sleepwalking Anna suffering from violent behaviour in her sleep and night terrors?
Eagles said theatre-goers "can expect to see a suspenseful, thrilling love story that constantly keeps you guessing.
"It's one of those shows where you don't fully know what's going on until the play is finished. I think that's what gives it it's intrigue. You kind of question everything that's happening as it happens."
The play features a mixture of realist and expressionist scenes, she added. "There's going to be elements of dance that I'm really excited about as well.
"There's a lot of work from our technical team to make it a really beautiful show to watch."
The actors will be familiar to regular CAT supporters.
Kirtzinger played Renfield in last fall's Dracula: Mina's Quest, in which Del Carmen was assistant director. Del Carmen is very active in the local theatre community and appeared in last year's CAT production of The Gentleman Clothier.
Any Night is the work of award-winning Vancouver playwrights and actors Daniel Arnold and Medina Hahn, who have toured the play through Canada and internationally and whose feature film adaptation of Any Night won a Canadian Film Fest Super Channel Screenplay Award.
Any Night can be seen at CAT's Studio Theatre at Memorial Centre and runs Jan. 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, and 26. Tickets can be purchased through www.showpass.com or call the CAT box office at 403-967-1769.
