Gull Lake visitors are being warned to stay out of the water at Ebeling Beach.

Alberta Health Services issued a water quality advisory on Thursday morning warning that "due to elevated levels of fecal bacteria currently present in the water at Ebeling Beach Day Use Area … AHS is advising the public not to swim or wade at this beach area, effective immediately."

The dangerously high bacteria levels were detected following water testing at the beach.

"At current levels, gastrointestinal illness may result from ingestion of the water at Ebeling Beach. As well, there is the possibility of skin, ear and eye infections with water contact."

AHS repeated its standard reminder that no one should drink or cook with any untreated water directly from any lake or reservoir "at any time." Water-borne organisms, including fecal bacteria, can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

Environmental Public Health officers will continue to monitor the water at the Ebeling Beach Day Use Area.
