Lacombe County's Yuill subdivision is getting a new name.
The small community between Eagle's Quay and Westside Country Estates on the west side of Sylvan Lake will become Pelican Bay.
A Yuill resident requested the name change on behalf of local residents, who feel the new name will "better reflect the local environment."
The American white pelican migrates to the Sylvan Lake area each spring and summer and they are a common site.
"The proposed name 'Pelican Bay' speaks to an important feature of this area and, therefore, meets the intent of the county's subdivision naming policies," says a report to county council.
The subdivision was originally named after a woman, who apparently only lived there for a short amount of time before moving to B.C. County staff could not find any information on how the subdivision got its name and could find no other Yuills living in the municipality.
A survey was sent to all 96 landowners within a 1.6-kilometre radius of Yuill and the "vast majority" favoured the new name.
No other municipalities or agencies had any problem with the name change. The only cost will be the $250 cost of changing the sign.
