Residential building appears to be heating up in Red Deer.
City of Red Deer handed out 112 residential building permits last month, compared with 65 in May 2024. The value of the permits is up six-fold – $16.7 million compared with $2.7 million.
A $11.7 million permit for a 148-suite apartment under construction in Clearview Ridge is a big contributor to the value increase.
A similar pattern can be seen in the yearly statistics. Through five months, 313 residential permits worth $26.7 million were issued, compared with 293 worth $8 million. The number of permits increased by just under seven per cent, but the value soared 231 per cent.
The residential side drove the May building permit increases, which saw 128 permits worth $19.1 million of all kinds issued, compared with 92 permits worth $5.6 million a year ago.
Over five months, the numbers are very close, with 418 permits worth $55 million issued, compared with 420 worth $56.9 million.
On the commercial side, there were 84 permits worth $18.3 million through five months, compared with 90 worth $38.4 million a year ago.
Industrial activity is down, with six permits worth $2.7 million, compared with 10 worth $3.8 million in 2024. Public service activity is also down with 15 permits worth $7.1 million, against 27 and $6.4 million in 2024.
Among the permits issued was a permit valued at $1.3 million to relocate an emergency generator at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre. The Red Deer Rebels also received a $300,000 permit for demolition and rebuilding dressing rooms.
