Red Deer ringette tournament celebrates 40 years

Red Deer Ringette is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its its Friends on Ice Tournament this weekend.

What started as a small gathering of local athletes, the tournament now draws teams from across Alberta and sometimes neighbouring provinces. It begins Friday and runs through Sunday.

More than 65 teams at all ages and skill levels will compete at the Kinsmen, G.H. Dawe Community Centre and Collicutt Centre arenas.

There is also be a free Come Try It event, where children of all ages can come out and experience the sport of ringette firsthand. The Come Try It event will take place on Saturday at the Kinsmen Arena from 4:45-5:45 p.m. Experienced players and coaches will be on hand to provide information and instruction to interested children and their families, both on and off the ice. Players require a helmet and skates. Red Deer Ringette will provide the sticks and rings.
