Country music has always been close to the heart of Ashley Law, and now the Lacombe born-and-raised songstress has landed a prestigious nomination recognizing her talents.
Law, who is 17 and now calls Bentley home, is an official nominee for this year's 14th annual Country Music Alberta Awards in the 'Youth Horizon Award' category. The event will place take place from March 1-2 at the Grey Eagle Resort in Calgary.
"There are three rounds of nominations, and all the rounds are voted on by Country Alberta Music members," she explained, adding how grateful she is for the recognition. "Honestly, it has made the dreams of the past 12 years come true," she said.
"All of the time (put in), the hours, and the shows - it shows the growth I have had over the past couple of years."
A love for music came along pretty early for Law, who started playing guitar around the time she was 12.
"I come from a fourth-generation farm family, and country music is all that I have ever really listened to," she explained. "I also love being able to share my stories and experiences, and to try and have an impact on other people.
"I find that country music - no matter what mood you are in, and whether you are in love or in heartbreak - there is always a country song for you in that moment," she said, adding some of her key influences over the years have included Ashley McBryde, Miranda Lambert, and Lainey Wilson.
These days, Law is also following another passion - she is studying welding at Red Deer Polytechnic,
"I've always been a very hands-on person, and I have found that welding is a way for me to artistically experience 'work', but also be able to help the community, too. I really do love it!"
But back to her unfolding musical journey. Law is already an experienced performer, having landed appearances at the Monkey Top Saloon in Bentley, the Horizon Stage at the Big Valley Jamboree, Red Deer's Bo’s Bar and Stage, the Calgary Stampede, and the Grand Slam of Curling.
She's quite at home onstage, although there are always a few nerves, she added. "But I've always found that, no matter what, I'm doing it for me. There will be people that like you, and people that don't - but you have to stay true to yourself and what you believe in."
Her debut single, Not Go To Waste, was released in May of 2023 followed by Devil in Disguise this last spring.
Another one - Sweet Tea - is due the end of March, and fans can expect yet another this summer.
Devil In Disguise climbed into the top five of the Canadian Independent Country Charts, and landed airplay on Sirius XM's Top of the Country.
"My goal is to get a few more singles out there, and then I would consider releasing an EP."
Law also writes her own music, something she's been doing for years. It's a magical process that brings plenty of fulfillment, too. "For me, it mostly starts with words, and then I gain the melodies off of that. I have thousands of random lyrics and sayings in my phone, that just pop into my head at random times, and eventually, they will come together!"
Ultimately, Law said country singer Kym Simon, who she is also related to, has really helped to get her started in terms of recording, and to find her way as she explores more musical opportunities.
"Kym has mentored me for a couple of years now," said Law, adding it was also Simon who introduced her to her producer.
"If it wasn't for Kym, I wouldn't be where I am at this moment, and I wouldn't have met a lot of the people who I know now," she added. "I'm truly grateful for her."
Simon noted that she is beyond excited for Law and the incredible journey she’s on with her music career.
"In only been a couple of years, and she’s made impressive strides in the industry, learning and growing with every step. Her drive, confidence, and constant desire to improve make her stand out, and it’s been an absolute pleasure working with her," said Simon.
"I can’t wait to see all the amazing things ahead for her!"
In the meantime, Law is cherishing every step of this experience as doors continue to open, and her creativity continues to shine.
"Music always brightens my day. One of the things I do truly love about music are all the stories that are shared through it - whether they be memories, or just the simple songs that bring you joy."
