Ponoka County Regional Fire Services East District helped a frightened dog off the thin and broken-up ice on the Battle River in Ponoka on Friday evening, March 28.
According to the Ponoka RCMP, the fire department responded at about 8:30 p.m., answering the call to assist man's best friend.
The firefighters donned water rescue suits and entered the frigid water to reach the scared pooch that had gotten away from its owners and gotten onto the patchy river ice.
They were able to grab onto the dog’s leash and reunite him with his family who were waiting on the riverbank, the RCMP said.
Last month, the Town of Ponoka issued a release, advising residents to be cautious around the Battle River and storm water ponds as the warmer temperatures meant snow and ice would be melting.
The release reminded residents to keep children and pets off the river at all times and to keep dogs on a leash.
"Regardless of how thick a patch of river ice may look, due to constantly flowing water beneath the ice surface, there are weak spots that can quickly give way, sending you, your loved one or pet through the ice without warning," the release stated.
"If your pet does fall through the ice, please keep in mind that calling for help is the best option rather than venturing onto the ice yourself."
