With the onset of cold weather resulting in the cancellation of buses in recent days, Clearview Public Schools is reminding the general public of its safety-centered policy for students and staff in a release.

The release notes that "we understand that school bus cancellations can be disruptive, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate these challenging weather conditions. "

The release goes on to note that the decision to cancel bus routes is based on division Administrative Procedure 132, which guides bus drivers, the division director of transportation, and the transportation coordinator in their decision-making.

Factors in Administrative Procedure 132 used in determining whether buses will run include air temperature and wind speed, reduced visibility, freezing rain, and a combination of other unsafe conditions.

School bus operations will be cancelled for the day if the air temperature is expected to reach -35 C, or -40 C with windchill factored in.

"We know that severe weather is unpredictable," notes the release, discussing why bus routes are cancelled the night before. "However, making our decisions early, typically the evening before, allows families time to make necessary arrangements for childcare, transportation, and work adjustments. We believe it is better to err on the side of caution than to face a preventable crisis. The safety of students and staff will always come first."

If buses are cancelled in the morning, they remain cancelled in the afternoon to ensure that students do not become stranded if conditions worsen.

Under current Clearview Public Schools policy, even when buses aren't running due to extreme weather conditions schools remain open with staff present for those who can attend.

"The final decision to send children to school remains with families, considering individual circumstances," concludes the release. "We encourage parents to ensure children dress appropriately for severe weather if they plan to attend school.

We recognize that these decisions may cause inconvenience, and we do not take them lightly. Thank you for your understanding and support as we work together to keep students and staff safe."
