Assessment-based tax system is unfair

I find it hard to believe that 60 per cent of Red Deer homeowners saw a decrease in their property assessments as stated by the city, while 40 per cent stayed the same or had a “slight” increase.

Mine went up seven per cent. That’s not a slight increase. Nearly every single one of my friends had an increase near the same. We all live in the south end of Red Deer; in Ironstone, Inglewood, or Anders.

So while the rest of Red Deer can enjoy a so-called tax break on their property assessments because their values didn’t increase, our property taxes keep increasing every year and the rest of us continually keep getting a double whammy with tax increases and increased property tax assessments in other parts of the city. That way, the increased property values generate more taxes and then also more cost to taxpayers when the tax rate increases.

I’m not opposed to paying taxes, it’s what keeps our hospitals, schools, roads clear, etc and that’s a good thing. But thanks, city of Red Deer, way to keep sticking it to us year after year! At least some of us anyway.
