Harper should be ashamed to appear at a food bank

I read in the Advocate on April 2 how Prime Minister Stephen Harper was helping out at a Veterans Food Bank in Calgary as a photo-op.

I read in the Advocate on April 2 how Prime Minister Stephen Harper was helping out at a Veterans Food Bank in Calgary as a photo-op.

I can’t believe he would show his face at a Veterans Food Bank, he should be too embarrassed.

These veterans are men and women who risked their lives in wars overseas to preserve our way of life so we can be free and he can have a democratically-elected position such as he does. And to show his appreciation . . . he stuffs groceries in bags at a food bank for them?

Many of these veterans have friends and comrades buried in graves in France, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Sicily and Hong Kong. He should be embarrassed.

While many previous Reform MPs (Harper included?) self righteously denounced the “too generous” MP pensions, they seem to have changed their opinions and have now accepted them.

How is it just that any citizen of Canada who risked their lives to preserve our freedom and safety should have to resort to a food bank to make ends meet, while an MP who has risked virtually nothing feels they deserve one of the best pensions in Canada if not the world?

I am sure many people would like to see the veterans’ pension and the MPs’ pension made equal and after that, why not help our seniors, many of whom live near the poverty level?

Harper can bring in the legislation if he wants to.

And at the end of the photo-op at the Veterans Food Bank, Harper refused to speak with reporters. In my opinion he was too embarrassed.
