Heartfelt gesture for troops

A while ago I was driving with friends along a main road artery in the big city of Toronto. We were approaching three overhead bridges, each some distance apart from the others. At each bridge, there were several animated young people waving Canadian flags over the bridges’ side rails.

A while ago I was driving with friends along a main road artery in the big city of Toronto. We were approaching three overhead bridges, each some distance apart from the others. At each bridge, there were several animated young people waving Canadian flags over the bridges’ side rails.

“What’s the big occasion?” I asked my companions. They looked at me, a visitor to their city, with very sad expressions.

“Look behind us,” they replied solemnly, “there’s a hearse coming along. Those teens are welcoming back to Canada the dead body of a Canadian soldier killed by snipers in Afghanistan.”

My heart skipped a beat as tears flooded my eyes. Never have I suddenly been so stunned by pathos than during that casual visit back to Toronto. What those young people exhibited on those overhead bridges was so magnificent and magnanimous. Bravo fellow citizens!

We hope our men will soon be home safe and sound with God’s help.
