I reside in Alix and although I don’t know Brian Knight (Tees-area farmer guilty of shooting ATV thief, Advocate, Saturday, Jan. 15) I believe he didn’t mean to shoot the thief.
I can imagine how infuriated I would feel seeing someone on my property attempting to steal something that is mine and almost getting away!
It used to be that your home was your castle and you had a right to defend it ... these three men plotted and planned to steal from Knight, it wasn’t just a spur of the moment thing.
I don’t feel one bit sorry for Harold Groening’s injuries and his sentence was ridiculous. How can you even call “one month in jail” a sentence? Could his wages for a month have bought the ATV he tried to steal? With sentences like this, his new neighbours should be warned. The other two thieves’ sentences were even more of a joke (15 days for one and a $400 fine for the other)!
I wonder how the justice system will treat Knight? Unfortunately, I imagine he will be the only one serving any real sentence because he actually injured one of these model citizens! I imagine many of us will be hoping Knight will be dealt with the same lightness that the justice system dealt with those thieves!
