Last Dec. 3, Red Deer County director of corporate services said the 2008 county tax bill was $30.2 million. He further stated the county anticipated collecting $32 million in 2009.

On Apr. 3, Red Deer County said they now needed $33.3 million and that was an increase of $2 million over 2008!

On May 8,they decided they now needed $33.8 million and again stated that was a $2 million increase over 2008!

Now which is it? Was the 2008 tax bill $30.2 million, or $31.3 million, or $31.8 million?

If the 2008 tax bill was $30.2 million the 2009 tax bill would be close to a 12 per cent increase!

It is difficult to have confidence in our elected officials when they can’t seem to get the numbers right. Maybe they don’t even know what the real figures are?
